Thattekkad was the first bird sanctuary in Kerala made up of typical evergreen forests and grassland patches. Thattekkad literally means flat forest and located between the branches of Periyar River.

The credit of this bird sanctuary is to Dr. Salim Ali, who reported it as an extremely rich bird diversity after his survey. Thattekkad consist of extensive plantations of teak, rosewood, mahogany and more than 300 species of birds found there. The forest is home to nearly 28 species of mammals and about 9 species of reptiles.
